Job Search Mistakes | Quality Life Resources

Job Search Mistakes

Don?t make these common job search mistakes.

Searching for a new job, especially if you?re unemployed, takes time and patience. However, not everyone devotes the time and energy needed to land that new job. Here are the top mistakes people make when looking for a new job.

Not Putting in the Time Necessary

Looking for a job, particularly if you?re not working, is a job in itself. You should be spending several hours a day, most days of the week, looking for your job. The reason for this is that you need to get your resume out there to get called for interviews. If you aren?t applying, you?re not being considered for openings. I?m always amazed when I see interviews with people who have been unemployed for a very long time and they have only applied for a small number of jobs. Unless your skills are highly specialized, the average person can apply for several jobs a day.

According to a 2011 study by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the median length of unemployment is about ten weeks before employment is found. So, that means that half of people are unemployed for longer than ten weeks and half of people are unemployed for less. If you worked a 40 hour work week, this means that you?ll have about 400 extra hours to devote to your job search. That?s a lot of time. Make sure you?re using this time to send out resumes, update your skills, and gear your resume/cover letter to each job listing so you can increase your chances of getting an interview.

Not Networking

People often say things like ?Getting a job is about who you know.? Well, in many cases, this is true. So, you should be out trying to meet people in your field.

If you?re new to networking, it can be hard to know where to start. For this, the internet is a valuable tool. You can look up meetings for professional organizations, your local chamber of commerce, organizations for young (or not so young) professionals, and your university?s alumni association. Attending meetings like this help you to meet a variety of people who may have connections all over your area.

In addition to business and networking events, you can try other events that are likely to attract a professional crowd. This could be things like lectures at a museum or at a library. The people who attend these events may not be in your specific field but, it?s important to cast a wide net when looking for a job.

When networking, make sure you are nicely dressed. You don?t have to wear a suit if it?s not a suit occasion but, make sure you are neat, clean and dressed similarly to everyone else at the event. Also, it?s important to bring simple business cards with your name, phone number, and email address so you can quickly and easily give a potential contact your information.

Not Following Up

Once you do get an interview, make sure that you follow up within a day or two. According to my research, experts seem to be pretty evenly split as to whether a snail mail thank you card or an email thank you is the best way to go. However, all agree that you have to do something.

So, when you are at an interview, make sure you get the name of the person who interviewed you. If possible, get one of their business cards too. This is likely to have their direct contact information on it. Then, use your preferred method to follow up with your interviewer. This technique is simple but, it makes the interviewer think of you again after the interview and, hopefully, all of the wonderful things the two of you discussed.

When searching for a job, it?s important to use all the tools available to you. You never know when one of these things will lead to your next job.

What mistakes do you think job seekers should avoid?

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides: Surface-style keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides Surfacestyle keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony's next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site, Mobiflip. In short, it's thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 ("or later"), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony's existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing. There's even some tentative pricing, with the different-sized models marked up at $450, $550 and $650, respectively. The pictures also cover Sony's plans to add a lightweight keyboard to its next tablet, similar to Microsoft's Surface plans, but with some Smart Cover-esque kickstand skills thrown in for good measure. We've added a shot of the keyboard cover after the break, but you can take a tour of the rest of the slides -- which include a raft of accessories and docks -- at the source link below.

Update: We've been in touch with a Sony spokesperson, who had "no comment at this stage." We may have to wait until next month, when European trade show IFA kicks off -- with Sony in attendance -- until we hear anything more concrete.

Fraudulent pet insurance claims take a new turn - Insurance Quotes

Troy Anderson

In the history of insurance fraud, a $20,000 claim for a fake dead cat is certainly one of the strangest cases you?ll ever come across.

?Feline fraud in the United States is very rare,? says James Quiggle, a spokesman for the nonprofit Coalition Against Insurance Fraud. ?In fact, pet fraud is almost nonexistent. It?s almost a way of life in Britain because there is a much larger culture of fraud that makes insurance scams socially acceptable behavior in many parts of the country. But you don?t see that as much in the U.S.?

Rich Roesler, a spokesman for the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, agrees that this particular case is highly unusual, especially the amount claimed for the cat.

Officials: Owner supplied fake feline photos

On July 11, 2012, Tacoma resident Yevgeniy Samsonov, 29, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree attempted theft and felony insurance fraud. The charges stem from a $20,000 claim that Samsonov filed for a fictitious dead cat, using pet photos he lifted from the Internet, Roesler says.

fake-dead-cat

The case began March 27, 2009, with a minor car crash in Tacoma. Samsonov?s car was rear-ended at a red light when the driver of the car behind him slipped her foot off her brake. Samsonov filed a chiropractic treatment claim for his injuries. The other driver?s insurer, PEMCO Insurance, paid him $3,452.

About two and a half years later, Samsonov sought additional payment from PEMCO. In addition to the vehicle damage and medical claim, Samsonov claimed his cat was killed in the accident.

The company issued him a check for $50 as compensation for the cat.

More than a year went by and Samsonov wrote to PEMCO again, saying that in addition to the first cat, he had another cat ? Tom ? in the car, too. ?He said Tom was worth $20,000,? Roesler says.

Samsonov also sent two photos to PEMCO that he said he?d taken of his cat, Roesler says.

A PEMCO claims representative conducted a Google search and discovered identical cat images on websites, blogs, Facebook pages and Wikipedia posts about cats, Roesler says. The two images Samsonov submitted are actually of two different cats ? neither of which belongs to him, Roesler says.

?If you go to the Wikipedia entry for cats, you?ll find one of those photos,? Roesler says. ?He didn?t work very hard to come up with those photos. Neither of the cats he submitted were ever his cats. Frankly, we have no evidence that he did in fact have a cat in the car at all.?

Afterward, PEMCO canceled its $50 check and forwarded the case to the anti-fraud unit of the Washington insurance commissioner.

Jon Osterberg, a spokesman for PEMCO Insurance, declines to comment on the cat case. Osterberg points out that although insurance fraud might not strike the public as a serious crime, it is a significant problem that affects everyone.

?PEMCO takes insurance fraud seriously because we want to protect our customers and the public,? Osterberg says. ?As a mutual insurer, we?re owned by our policyholders, and fraud makes their premiums go up. We?re doing all we can to use our customers? money to pay only for legitimate claims.?

How insurance fraud affects you

Annual losses from insurance fraud total about $80 billion, Quiggle says. These scams run the gamut from fake car accidents to fake workers? compensation claims. ?Insurance fraud has upticked in the bad economy,? Quiggle says. ?Some people are turning to insurance fraud as an easy way out of a tight financial corner.?

But ?feline fraud? ? just like any kind of insurance fraud ? is a ?stupid thing to do,? Quiggle says. For one thing, there?s relatively little money to be had, he says. Furthermore, you face jail time and court fines.

?You get caught and you?ll have a criminal record that follows you the rest of your life,? Quiggle says. ?It shows up when you apply for jobs. It can wreck your family, possibly send you behind bars and ruin your finances with fines and penalties. Is this the risk you?re willing to take for a few insurance dollars??

Pet injury coverage

Despite any concerns about insurance fraud, some car insurance companies do offer pet injury coverage.

For example, Progressive car insurance policies protect pets. Progressive provides up to $1,000 of coverage for dogs and cats injured or killed in a crash. Progressive?s free pet coverage automatically is included in the collision portion of your policy.

Jeff Sibel, a spokesman for Progressive, says his company was the first in the country to offer pet coverage for car insurance policyholders.

?Pets are important to our customers,? Sibel says. ?It?s an added benefit we give our customers. Unfortunately, we only cover up to $1,000. There are times when the veterinarian bill might go over this limit, but it can help alleviate some of the costs.?

Match Making For Boomers: iWebcam To Find Online Relationships ...

Often people will log onto the internet and start dive bombing the big name websites that offer professional match making services. Others are clueless and do random online searches and end up on all kind of fly by night dating sites, spending countless hours browsing fake or embellished profiles.

If this has been you in the past, please don't give up! There's still hope for you yet! In my honest opinion, you can't really get to know someone by reading a profile or browsing through their uploaded photo gallery. The fact of the matter is, the only thing you're learning about a person is by the information they've specifically provided for you to obtain. I have often found that websites that operate in this manner usually just lead to future disappointment. The people aren't really who they say they are, and that is honestly one of the biggest problems I found on those kind of websites. They are who you want them to be.

Instead of taking the before mentioned path and falling into the fray that is online dating, perhaps it's time to take a different approach. Have you ever tried video chatting with someone on your webcam? Do you know how to video chat? Chatting online with others on webcam is the perfect way to actually get to know someone. Not to mention there is virtually no risk and you don't even have to leave your home, although it would be a good idea to look your best. I have had a lot of success with very little disappointment from frequenting iWebcam chat sites. People are generally themselves when you're chatting face to face through video with them.

You'll have ample opportunity to "put them on the spot" and ask a barrage of questions that's pretty much unavoidable without having to compromise your safety. Of course you may stumble across adult oriented chat rooms or other types of chat that you aren't necessarily interested in if you aren't careful. I have certainly tried my share of dating websites and have made countless profiles, only to find that I have wasted my time and will be starting from ground zero once again.

To reiterate, you will most likely have much more success trying a video dating or video chat site opposed to one's that require you to enter multiple search queries at the off chance you'll find "true love".

If you're interested in using iWebcam to meet new singles, you can visit selphie.orgfree.com to give it one more go at finding the person that's right for you. Providing quality reviews, articles and writings on dating online.

U.S. and Europe block 'treaty for blind people' due to copyright ...

By The Guardian
Monday, July 30, 2012 9:03 EDT

?

The US and the EU are blocking a treaty that would give the world?s blind and visually impaired people ? 90% of whom live in the developing world ? easier access to published works in formats they can use.

A ?treaty for blind people? has been under discussion at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) since 2008, but negotiations have made little progress. In the latest round of talks in Geneva, which ended on Wednesday 25 July, negotiators deferred a decision on the issue once again, to the dismay of activists.

?This is not just a legal issue ? for us, this is a moral issue. It?s about human rights,? said Teresa Hackett, programme manager at Electronic Information for Libraries, a non-profit group based in the Netherlands.

There are about 256 million visually impaired people in the developing world, according to an estimate by the World Health Organisation. In many rich countries, blind people have ready access to works that have been translated into braille and other accessible formats such as audio and large-print books, although, according to the EU, only 5% of books are accessible to blind people in wealthy states.

However, under existing copyright law, poorer countries can?t access those translations without getting the express permission of the copyright holder. Few developing country governments have managed to do that, meaning that their blind and visually impaired populations are left with barely anything to read. The EU estimates that less than 1% of books are accessible to blind people in poorer countries.

?The Spanish organisation Once has well over 100,000 [translated] books that they would like to send to Latin American countries, but they can?t simply because of this copyright barrier,? said Dan Pescod of the Royal National Institute of Blind People. Libraries in five Latin American countries ? Colombia, Nicaragua, Mexico, Uruguay and Chile ? have fewer than 9,000 accessible books between them, he said.

A treaty at Wipo could change that. A binding agreement would mean people in the global south could get immediate access to books that have already been translated into accessible formats in other countries. A treaty would also lead to enormous cost savings, as expensive translation has to be replicated in every country that wants to produce an accessible form of a given book.

The European parliament passed a resolution in February calling on the EU to support a binding treaty for the blind, but it does not appear to be having much impact. ?The EU and the Americans are blocking the treaty ? that?s what?s going on,? said James Love, director of Knowledge Ecology International (KEI). ?It?s shameful what they?re doing.? He added that the administration of President Barack Obama has changed its position on the treaty over the past few years. In 2008 Obama?s transition team were making positive noises, but since then the administration has become less enthusiastic.

Europe and the US are home to some of the world?s biggest publishing companies, many of which don?t like the idea of an international treaty that would restrict their intellectual property rights. Observers speculate that the Obama administration may be loth to upset the publishing industry, a major campaign supporter, this late in an election year. ?What we can see in the [negotiating] room is that primarily it?s the business interests that dominate,? said Hackett.

Activists are hoping for a legally binding treaty, but US and European delegates have been pushing for a softer ?instrument? that would offer only guidelines and recommendations.

?We really don?t want to establish a precedent of developing a series of treaties that specifically focus on ? limitations and exceptions to the rights of copyright owners,? said Alan Adler of the Association of American Publishers, in an online interview with KEI. Discussions are due to begin again in November, after the US election.

Despite the setback, activists insist they will keep lobbying for a binding treaty. ?We in developing countries have found our voice and we are not going to back down,? said Rahul Cherian, of Inclusive Planet, an Indian nonprofit, in a statement to Wipo delegates last week. ?When people are demanding their basic rights, no power in the world is strong enough to stop them getting what they want.?

Phelps-Lochte matchup highlights day 1 of swimming

LONDON (AP) ? The retiring star with more gold medals than anyone. The friendly rival who intends to be the biggest star in London.

Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte.

What a way to start eight days of swimming at the Olympic pool!

The two Americans will go head-to-head Saturday in the 400-meter individual medley, a grueling race encompassing all four strokes, an appropriate way for one or the other to fire the first salvo in this most intriguing of rivalries.

"A very rough race," said Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, smiling at the possibilities. "It will be a coach's dream, but also a spectator's dream. It will be fantastic."

For Phelps, it's a chance to add to his record total of 14 gold medals and become the first male swimmer to win the same event at three straight Olympics. But Lochte is the defending world champion and defeated Phelps rather easily at the U.S. trials last month.

Lochte is certainly not lacking for confidence.

"Right after Beijing, I had a four-year plan for getting here to London," he said. "I thought I could go a lot faster. I knew I could, just because of the training I've done. That's why I knew this was going to be my year."

Lochte started following the same training regimen used by burly athletes who can compete in Strongman competitions ? rolling large tires, tossing kegs, dragging chains. He believes it's made him stronger than anyone else in the pool. He believes it's the edge he needs to beat Phelps, and everyone else.

"It's going to pay off," Lochte said. "I just know it."

The Phelps-Lochte showdown won't be the only event on the opening night of swimming.

The home crowd will be cheering on Britain's Hannah Miley in the women's 400 IM, where she'll be competing against American teenager Elizabeth Beisel and California-based Katinka Hosszu, the latest in a long line of Hungarian medley specialists. The men's 400 freestyle figures to be a tussle among China's Sun Yang, South Korea's Park Tae-hwan and France's Yannick Angel. Ranomi Kromowidjojo leads the Flying Dutch in the women's 4x100 free relay, an event the Netherlands won at the last Olympics and the past two world championships.

The Americans will look to challenge with a relay squad that potentially includes Natalie Coughlin, who won six medals in Beijing but didn't even qualify for an individual event for these games. The 29-year-old was knocked off at the U.S. trials by an emerging wave of teenage stars, including Missy Franklin, but managed to claim a spot on the team as a possible relay swimmer by finishing sixth in the 100 free.

Without a strong showing in the preliminaries, she might not even get a chance to swim the evening final. But, if the Americans finish on the podium, a morning swim would be good enough to give Coughlin the 12th medal of her career, tying Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as America's most decorated female Olympian.

But those races are mere warmups to the main event.

Phelps is chasing more history at these games, having already claimed the record for most golds ? five more than anyone else ? and knocked off Mark Spitz's iconic Olympic standard with eight wins in Beijing. Next up: Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who is two ahead of Phelps with 18 career medals. It shouldn't be too much of a challenge for him to take down that record, since he's got seven events in London and figures to win a medal of some color in every one of them.

Lochte doesn't mind Phelps winning silver or bronze. Those colors don't interest the laid-back Floridian in the least.

"You should be going in with the mindset of winning," Lochte said. "That's what I'm going to be doing each race. I'm going up there to win. I'm not going for silver or bronze, I'm going for gold."

The winningest Olympian ever will certainly have something to say about that. Phelps struggled to stay motivated after Beijing, and some lackluster training showed at last year's world championships, where he was beaten by Lochte in both the 200 free and 200 individual medley. But Phelps has clearly regained his racing edge, wanting to go out in style at what he insists will be the final meet of his career. He intends to retire as soon as his final Olympic race is done.

"Last workout ever," Phelps tweeted Friday morning, joking that he wouldn't have to do anymore "garbage yardage" and thanking his coach for guiding him throughout his career. "Now let's have some fun this week."

Phelps showed he means business by beating Lochte in both the 200 free and the 200 IM at the U.S. trials. While Lochte took the 400 IM, Phelps only restored that event to his program earlier this year, after vowing to give it up after Beijing. He figures to be faster in London than he was in Omaha.

"It's always a challenge to have things go perfectly," Phelps said. "For the very first night, it is going to be a challenging race. It's going to be an exciting race. Bob and I have changed a few things over the past few weeks, and we'll see what's going to happen in that race. I feel confident. Everything feels good."

Lochte vows he'll also be a lot faster than he was at the trials.

"I knew that wasn't my meet," he said. "That was just a little appetizer, I guess. This is the big show. This is what I've been working for. I wasn't working for trials. I was working for the Olympics."

Because of his unique training program, he believes he's got an edge on everyone at the pool ? Phelps included. Lochte is convinced that flipping an 850-pound tire 20 or 30 times down a lonely Florida road is just what he needed to knock off the guy with all those gold medals.

"That Strongman stuff, it helped me out a lot," Lochte said. "I knew no other swimmer was doing the stuff I was doing. I knew I had an edge. That gave me the confidence that I needed."

Now, we'll see if that's enough.

What an opening night indeed.

Dependence Within a Healthy Marriage | Refresh | MarriageToday

As individuals, our most important dependency is upon God. But we must also recognize our need for human relationships?the kind that help us relate on a social, emotional, and practical level.

These relationships give us pleasure and fulfillment, and they include friends, extended family, and work associates. There are two kinds of human relationships that meet this need:

1) Spouses. The most important relationship on this level is with a husband or wife. Whether we recognize it our not, each of us longs for a relationship of deep trust and mutual support. God designed marriage to meet this need.

This mutual interdependence is very important for the development of intimacy in a marriage. It requires unity and cooperation, and also creates a healthy environment for successful parenting.c

Of course, in every marriage, there are problems to work through and obstacles to overcome in the pursuit deep trust and intimacy. But the benefits are worth it. A strong, healthy marriage requires a husband and wife to both depend upon each other.

2) Friends. In addition to our deep relationships with our spouses, we also need a group of godly, supportive friends. Great friendships with fellow believers?especially those who share our same values?support us in our faith and help us maintain the health of our marriages and families.

I?ve pastored and counseled people for many years concerning their marriages and families, and have noticed a common thread among those who constantly struggle and fail in family relationships.

They lack godly, supportive relationships around them. Or, to put it another way, they are involved in unhealthy and unsupportive relationships.

?Do not be deceived: ?Evil company corrupts good habits?? (1 Cor. 15:33).

Sadly, I?ve seen the truth of that statement time and time again in failed marriages. Unhealthy outside relationships can lead to unhealthy marriages. When a husband and wife are unable to meet each others? need for healthy dependency within marriage, their lives suffer.

We need those relationships as a couple and we need them as a family. The best place to build these types of relationships is through a healthy, Bible-based church. Find one. Get involved. Don?t hide out on the fringes, but become active and build relationships with healthy people.

Positive relationships keep us on the right track within our marriages. These friends support us, encourage us, and often model successful, godly relationships for us.

While there are no perfect people, a person who is committed to following God and living by the standards of Scripture will have a healthy influence on us. As a family, as a couple, and as individuals, those are relationships we need.

Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe Shames The NPP | VibeGhana.com

By Margaret Jackson

?

For the very first time in many, many years I could not believe what I was reading. And to make sure that I was reading the correct thing I had to re-read the article to ensure that I got the information or facts right. And the other thing I did was to make sure that my eyes were not deceiving me about the writer of that article titled, ?Akufo-Addo Should Not Have Encouraged Great Cape Greed.?

Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., Associate Professor of English, Journalism and Creative Writing at Nassau Community College of the State University of New York is a known columnist by many Ghanaians especially those who love to read feature articles on political, economic and social issues about Ghana. His thousands of articles are mainly littered on multiple Ghanaian websites and everybody knows where his heart is as far as political party affiliation is concerned.

To make the story even juicier, Okoampa-Ahoofe is the darling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who defends Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPPs Presidential Candidate for the 2012 elections on any given day. I have never read any article of his that he has ever raised a finger on Akufo-Addo. In fact, as a citizen of Akyem and someone related to Akufo-Addo, the Associate Professor has adopted the see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil attitude on any issue bothering on Akufo-Addo.

And to the amazement of everybody, Okoampa-Ahoofe has done his bit of defense of Akufo-Addo on everything very religiously. You will not want to read the hateful and terrible comments that people spew on Okoampa-Ahoofe?s articles but this Akufo-Addo Diaspora Soldier has soldiered on to the astonishment of even NPP supporters. He had never been bothered by any insults on any article as far as the article is promoting or guarding the tainted image of Akufo-Addo.

Therefore, if for the very first time you read an article in which Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., the brash defender of Akufo-Addo, is questioning the judgment of Akufo-Addo on the unending story of Judgment Debt Controversy that seems to have engulfed the country since November 2011, it gives you the biggest cause for concern. I can say with all certainty that Okoampa-Ahoofe will be the very last man standing for Akufo-Addo; therefore, if he has dared to criticize him on the judgment debt saga, then it is very obvious that Akufo-Addo has indeed crossed the line.

Barely a week ago, Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been junketing around the country slamming the NDC government on the Woyome saga and even stated emphatically and multiple times that he will never allow anything ?Woyome? in his dream government, got the rudest shock of his life when he was exposed at a press conference organized by the government and addressed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Information Minister, that Akufo-Addo wrote a letter dated October 3, 2011, recommending that the Ministry of Finance should pay about $1.3 Million to the Great Cape Company of Switzerland for the wrongful termination of a contract to supply clinker to the Ghana National Procurement Agency (GNPA). The incident occurred under the erstwhile General F. W. K. Akuffo?s led Supreme Military Country regime in 1978. To buttress this revelation, a copy of the letter written by Akufo-Addo was produced at the press conference.

But the NPP immediately jumped on the revelation slamming it as nothing to write home about. Whilst somebody even stated that the NDC government ?scored an own goal? in their futile attempt to rope in Nana Akufo-Addo in the judgment debt saga, other NPP folks decided not to talk about the double standard and shameful behaviour of Akufo-Addo but rather decided to mock the Information Minister, Fritz Baffour, for introducing Ablakwa during the press conference.

Therefore, for about a week now, the NPP folks who have been feeling the heat of the role played by Akufo-Addo in the Great Cape Company story have not offered any credible reason/s as to why Akufo-Addo did what he did, whilst Akufo-Addo, as usual has also been mute on that issue. You know very well that Akufo-Addo never talks about any issue concerning him.

But Okoampa-Ahoofe, NPP Chief Defender has a different take. Now hear him in his own words, ?Now, where Nana Akufo-Addo?s error in judgment comes up regards the official letter that the now-presidential candidate of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is alleged to have written to the extant Minister of Finance, asking for a payment to be made to the Great Cape Company. One professionally expects that in 2001, as Ghana?s newly-appointed Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Nana Akufo-Addo?s aforesaid letter had been duly copied to the plaintiffs. If so, then the former NPP-MP for Akyem-Abuakwa South ought to have flatly refused to ?authenticate? the same letter to Dr. Nat Tanoh, the local representative of the Great Cape Company ten long years later!?

Okoampa-Ahoofe continues, ?In other words, other than doing so purely on the informal basis of friendship ? or something clearly bordering on the extra-professional ? Nana Akufo-Addo ought not to have written his October 3, 2011 letter, allegedly seeking to authenticate his original letter of more than a decade earlier.?

This is what the NPP folks cannot seem to understand and are beating about the bush rather than venturing into the bush and taking the bull by the horn by saying that what Akufo-Addo did was wrong. The NPP cannot say this because the Woyome issue is part of their campaign message so openly saying that Akufo-Addo was dead wrong in writing the letter will knock off their so-called Woyome campaign message.

Now Okoampa-Ahoofe has shamed the NPP by pointing out that what Akufo-Addo did was wrong and his article would be further proof that what the NDC exposed concerning Akufo-Addo was the right thing to do. You cannot continue to slam something and be exposed for doing something related to the same thing and say that yours is no big deal.

The NPP can run but they cannot hide. They can weave and even adopt the rope-a-dope strategy which they have used effectively in the past but they cannot run away from the fact that Akufo-Addo is equally guilty when it comes to judgment debt payments. If Akufo-Addo is not guilty, why is that it is his hirelings who are defending him whilst he is completely quiet about the issue.

Akufo-Addo must prove to Ghanaians that he is his own man by coming out to say why he did what he did on the Great Cape Company debt issue. He is gradually becoming a wanna-be president who cannot talk about any controversy he has been implicated. Ghanaians should take note that if Akufo-Addo even today cannot address any issue concerning him, what then will happen if we mistakenly vote him into power and something dreadful happens.

Destruction of Education and the Preservation of Inequity ...

Detroit's Mumford High School, demolished in July, 2012.

The Destruction of Education and the Preservation of Inequity

By Barry Garelick

From the fall of 1964 through June 1967, I attended Mumford High School in Detroit.? .?? (I wrote about it previously here: http://www.educationnews.org/commentaries/156298.html.) My brother and sister also attended Mumford and graduated in 1962 and 1958.?? As I write this, Mumford is in the process of being demolished.? The demolition is part of the $500 million Detroit Public Schools Capital Improvement Program started in 2009.?? Because of a shrinking student population, the state is in the process of shutting down almost half the schools in Detroit.? The school district is attempting to sell the shut down schools for redevelopment, an effort that has earned over $10 million since 2009.

But although Mumford is being destroyed, a new version of the high school has been built on what had been the original Mumford?s athletic field.? The new school cost $52 million to build, secured by a bond issue in a city where almost half of its schools have been shut down.?? From the web page for the new Mumford, it is described as a ?LEED Silver Certified state-of-the-art facility and will offer academic core areas, a high-tech media center, modern science laboratories, a courtyard student quad, and a community health clinic.?? Mumford is one of 15 schools that has been taken out of the Detroit Public School system and assigned to Michigan?s Educational Achievement Authority?a statewide district set up for managing struggling schools.? The new Mumford will open in the fall.

Mumford High, 1967.

For those of us who grew up in a city that was at one time vibrant and had one of the best school systems in the country, it has been difficult to watch its decay.? We have seen the closing and destruction of automobile plants, the magnificent J. L. Hudson?s Department Store building, Tiger Stadium, and other landmarks with no effort made to preserve even a fraction of their historical significance. But even sadder for me is to watch the destruction of my old high school, once one of the top schools in the city.? It? is one more icon, a school built in 1949 with distinctive blue tile and an art deco architecture, which with proper maintenance and care could well have lasted a few more decades.

It is fairly easy to dismiss the decline of education in Detroit on its failing economy and its accompanying social ills and even for some to make sweeping accusations about the low cognitive ability of Detroit?s student population.? But the decline of education is not limited to Detroit.? It has been happening across the U.S. for quite some time, although not as catastrophically as in Detroit.? The vision of education in this country for many decades has been education and equity for all.? In fact, the history of the equity problems and their solutions in the U.S. has its parallels in the history of education in Detroit.? It is a story of how the fight to eliminate inequity in education has actually increased it.

The educational system in the U.S. has historically pitted many groups against each other? skin color was not the only determinant. Children from farms rather than from cities, and children of immigrants, for example, were often assumed to be inferior in cognitive ability and treated accordingly.

Mirel (1993) (an education professor at University of Michigan who has done much research in the history of the Detroit Public School system) points out that during the depression of the 30?s in Detroit as in the U.S as a whole, the push in education was to keep graduation rates steady and prevent drop outs.? With the deficit of work, the thinking was that it was better to have young people in school than out with nothing to do.? The general curriculum in Detroit at that time was experiencing a large number of failure rates.? To keep the students off the streets, courses were made easier.? ?Descriptive? science courses were introduced in lieu of lab-based courses and focused on useful topics such as how vacuum cleaners worked.? ?Relevance? was the watchword just as ?engagement? is now.?? Topics such as traffic safety were woven into classes such as civics, and schools offered courses in personal standards, focusing on topics such as diet, dress, etiquette and personal hygiene.? Girls were offered courses on ?Appearing to Advantage, ?Homemaking?, ?Use of Leisure Time? and ?Bride and Trousseau?.?

This pattern continued long past the depression, past World War II and into the 50?s and 60?s, during which time the influx of African Americans from the south into Detroit continued because of the well-paying factory jobs.? Curricula in high schools had evolved into four different types: college-preparatory, vocational (e.g., plumbing, metal work, electrical, auto), trade-oriented (e.g., accounting, secretarial), and general.? Students were tracked into the various curricula based on IQ and other standardized test scores as well as other criteria.? By the mid-60?s, Mirel (1993) documents that most of the predominantly black high schools in Detroit had become ?general track? institutions that consisted of watered down curricula and ?needs based? courses that catered to student interests and life relevance. Social promotion had become the norm within the general track, in which the philosophy was to demand as little as possible of the students.

During the period of the 50?s and early 60?s, Mumford had been one of the premier high schools in Detroit, competing with Cass Tech?a magnet school in the downtown area that had admission requirements?for the academic achievements of its students.? Mumford was located in northwest Detroit which was a mix of working class, middle and upper middle class neighborhoods.? Though predominantly Jewish, the northwest section was also home to upper middle class African Americans who attended Mumford (Graham; 1999).

Northwest Detroit started to experience the phenomenon of white flight starting in the late fifties.? The flight began in the twenties, starting in a more central area of Detroit?an area that would be the site of the riots to occur in the summer of 1967?that had also been predominantly Jewish in the 20?s through the 40?s. The flight?s trajectory continued and by the 60?s included northwest Detroit where I was living, and would continue to the suburbs.? The demographic of Mumford was changing as well.?? According to Mirel (1993), 22 percent of black students were in the general track by 1967 with whites making up only 2 percent of the general track despite it being one of the most academically oriented high schools in the city.

After graduation, most boys who were in the general and vocation tracks in Detroit were drafted and sent to Viet Nam.? Boys in the college prep track who went on to college, on the other hand, were given a draft deferment status which students in the general and vocational tracks did not receive.? The role of the draft policies at the time of Viet Nam played no small part in contributing to the recognition of inequity between white and blacks.? One key manifestation of the tension occurred in April of 1966 when the students of Northern High School?largely black at that time?staged a massive walkout in protest of the principal?s decision to ban an editorial in the school paper that protested the ?inferior education? and lack of college prep courses at Northern.? Northern had been a premier academic institution in the 20?s, 30?s and 40?s.? With the influx of blacks into the high school, Northern had become a general track school.

The summer of 1967 brought the riots that ultimately escalated the white flight to the suburbs, and brought in its wake racial rifts from which some say Detroit has never recovered.? In the years shortly following the riots, there were efforts to decentralize and desegregate schools?met with protest from the white communities that would be affected.? A friend of mine attended Cooley High School (located a few miles away from Mumford). In 1968 he witnessed a race riot that occurred at the school in April of that year, shortly after Martin Luther King was assassinated. He described it as follows:

?It really was a travesty, particularly in that the kids fighting were the ones in tech programs, being streamed into Viet Nam. ?Cooley was half black, half white and a powder keg as long as I was there. ? I went back to visit a year after I graduated ? the white exodus occurred and Cooley had become almost entirely black.? Achievement?was up, violence was down ? it had transformed into a 50?s middle class school.?

My friend?s description is apt in a way that he may not have realized when he wrote it.? To his eyes, achievement looked like it was on the rise as it did in many schools.? Change had in fact come to Northern to address the protest of a few years back and it came to Cooley, Mumford and other predominantly black schools in Detroit. But the change came in the form of more ?relevance?, focusing on black history, black culture, the arts, dance, and creative writing.? The feeling was that the outlying suburban schools (where the whites had now fled) had a college prep curriculum that was ?white-based? and did not reflect the needs, values or interests of the black community.? As Mirel (1993) states, ?it was a matter of community control?not curriculum reform.?

The reforms in the Detroit schools were consistent with reforms brought about across the U.S. during the 60?s and 70?s, by radical critics of schools such as Jonathan Kozol.? These reformers brought accusations of sadistic and racist teachers, said to be hostile to children and who lacked innovation in pedagogy.? ?Traditional? schooling was seen as an instrument of oppression and schools were recast in a new, ?hipper? interpretation of what educational progressivism was supposed to be about.? In moving away from the way things were, the education establishment?s goal was to restore equity to students rather than maintaining the tracking that created dividing lines between social class and race.?? The end product however was a merging of general track with college prep with the result that college prep was becoming student-centered and needs-based with lower standards, and less homework assigned.? Classes such as Film Making and Cooking for Singles were offered, and requirements for English and History courses were reduced if not dropped.? Social class and race was no longer a barrier for such classes as evidenced by the increasing numbers of white students who began taking them.? With the requirements for graduation being diminished in the ?general? track as a result of the student-centered fad, this track saw an increase in students from 12 percent in the late 60?s to 42 percent by the late 70?s. (Ravitch, 2003).

Currently, high schools have an honors/AP track, and a general track.? The general track consists of less rigorous courses and represents a lower level of education.? Qualification for the honors/AP track starts before high school, and in elementary and middle schools, there is also a two-tier system.? The higher tier (starting at about third grade) is the gifted and talented track.? In general, this track provides teacher-directed traditional instruction at or above grade level.? For students who do not qualify (and the criteria for qualifying vary, with differing definitions of what constitutes ?giftedness?), they are placed in classes with students of varying abilities.? As such, they are subjected to a one-size-fits-all curriculum that involves student-centered group activities, and project-oriented approaches to learning.? This educational approach is guided by an undying faith led by the educational establishment that all we need to do is teach students how to learn, how to think critically and that facts and content are things they can look up (on Google) on a ?just in time? basis whenever they really need to know.?? For many students, the approach is a guarantee that they will not be able to handle honors or AP courses in high school.

The elimination of inequity and tracking, therefore, has evolved to a two track system starting in lower grades and continuing on in high school.? Those students not considered ?smart enough for the gifted programs? are consigned to the lower track. ?This may not be the case if they get the skills and knowledge they need from elsewhere (tutors, learning centers, parents).? But in low income areas, this is probably not very common.? It certainly is not common in Detroit.

In the meantime, there is a push for more technology in the schools, as if SmartBoards in every classroom and an iPad for every student is the answer. The tearing down of Mumford and the building of a state-of-the-art high school are indicative of what education has now become. As in Detroit, the U.S. as a whole has long observed the demolition of education in the US; helpless to do anything about it, and given promises of great progress and changes for the future.

Barry Garelick has written extensively about math education in various publications including Education Next, Educational Leadership, and Education News. He recently retired and has obtained his credential to teach math (middle school/high school) in California.
