Newtown trying to give kids a sense of normalcy

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The children at the Sandy Hook Elementary school won't be returning to classes for another week, but officials from the town, school district and local agencies are doing their best in the meantime to keep them occupied following a massacre at their school two weeks ago.

The students have not attended school since a gunman killed 20 of their schoolmates and six adults on Dec. 14. They are slated to return to a different school next Thursday.

In the meantime, they've been treated to field trips, toy giveaways and some organized play time.

"A couple of the teachers have done pizza parties," said Janet Robinson, Newtown's school superintendent. "Another met her kids at the library so they could have a little reading time together. The most important thing has been connecting the students back to their teacher and their classmates."

The Newtown Youth Academy, a nonprofit sports center, opened its doors to all kids in town at no cost shortly after the shooting. But from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. last week, the building's turf field, basketball and tennis courts, and giant inflatable obstacle course were reserved just for Sandy Hook Elementary students.

There have been arts and crafts for the smaller kids, as well as face-paintings. Some celebrities, including two members of the Harlem Globetrotters and former University of Connecticut basketball star Tina Charles, also have stopped by to play with the children. UConn's men's basketball team was making a trip Thursday.

"The idea was to get them away from the house, the television and all the coverage of this tragedy and get them to a place where kids can just be kids," said owner Peter D'Amico, a longtime youth coach in town.

On Thursday afternoon, school buses were loading up at the Youth Academy for a trip to Stamford and a larger complex, Chelsea Piers, which also has ice rinks and an indoor swimming pool, he said. Sports celebrities, such as Brooklyn Nets forward Kris Humphries, planned to meet them there. No media were allowed.

University of Connecticut psychologist Julian Ford, who spent time counseling in Newtown in the first days after the shooting, said it's important for the grieving process to include an outlet that lets children know that while things will never be the same, it's OK to enjoy life.

"They are all going to be thinking about what happened," he said. "That, unfortunately, is inescapable. But this gives them a chance to say, 'Life is carrying on.' Nothing will be the same, but it's also continuing in ways that it should be."

Some students and their parents on Thursday toured the Chalk Hill school in Monroe, a former middle school being reopened next week for the Sandy Hook students. An open house is planned for Wednesday.

"Getting back into the school is like getting back on the horse," Robinson said. "Some of the scariness is gone once they cross that threshold. They are just so happy to see their teachers."

State police said they plan to keep their contact with the children to a minimum as they continue investigating the shooting.

"We certainly don't want to traumatize them any more than they've already been traumatized," said Lt. J. Paul Vance, the department's spokesman. "If (an interview is) not necessary it won't be done. Our investigators will make all those determinations."

In the meantime, Ford has encouraged parents to keep the kids involved in a normal holiday routine and deal with the tragedy as it comes up, rather than making it a focal point of their lives.

David Connors, who has 8-year-old triplets who attend Sandy Hook, said he and his wife have made play dates with their friends, brought the kids to see family for the holidays and participated in the class get-togethers and recreation events.

"That's been, I think, helpful at least in the short term just to kind of keep them doing things, keep them seeing their friends and being nearby and talking to family," Connors said.

Todd Wood of Newtown has five children, the youngest age 4 and the oldest in college. His children's piano teacher lost a child in the shooting, and the family knows other victims as well.

He said he's found that each child has reacted differently to the tragedy. He said he is not making the shooting the center of his family's life but is not pretending it didn't happen, either.

"We did Christmas, we had our lights here, we've tried to make things as normal as possible," he said. "But we also went down to see the memorials. I don't want to shield them from it. I want to let them grieve in their own way."

Ford said that is healthy. He said children will remember their friends as they go about doing normal kid things.

Chris Wolcott, the sport's academy's operations manager, said the best part of having the kids at the center is that the tragedy is pushed aside, at least for a little while.

"A couple times someone would drop a weight (in the facility's health center) and you would hear a bang and there would be a kid who would freeze for a second," he said. "But that would last a split-second. Most of the time, everyone just had a great time."

Egypt's government sets priorities after charter

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's government set legislative priorities for parliament on Wednesday as it convened for the first time since a new constitution was passed, asking lawmakers to focus on setting rules for upcoming elections, regulating the media and fighting corruption.

The official confirmation Tuesday that the Islamist-drafted constitution passed in a referendum ushered in a new chapter in Egypt's two-year transition from authoritarian rule, likely to be characterized more by legal battles and less by street protests.

The dispute over the constitution deeply polarized the country, reigniting mass street protests that turned deadly at times.

"We have now moved from conflict in the streets between political forces and the regime to a new phase of legal disputes over legislation and control of state institutions," said Nasser Amin, the head of the Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and Legal Profession. "This is the most critical phase...and the battle won't be very clear to regular people."

The constitution's supporters, including Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his government, had argued it would pave the way for more stability in Egypt and the building up of state institutions.

The largely secular and liberal opposition who opposed the constitution fear it enshrines a prominent role for Islamic law, or Shariah, in governing the country's affairs and reinforces Islamists' hold on power. They say it constitution restricts freedoms and ignores the rights of women and minorities.

The main opposition group has questioned the legitimacy of the charter itself, saying it was rushed through without national consensus.

"Egypt constitution (is) void as it conflicts (with) certain peremptory norms of international law," such as freedom of belief and expression, opposition leader Mohammed ElBaradei said on his Twitter account Wednesday.

Under the new constitution, the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, the traditionally toothless upper house, was granted temporary legislative powers and began its work a day after the official results of the referendum said the charter passed with nearly 64 percent. It will legislate until elections for a new lower house are held within two months.

"I congratulate the Egyptian people on behalf of the government for the passing of the constitution of the second republic, which establishes a modern democratic state where the people's voices are heard and where injustice, dictatorship, repression, nepotism and corruption take a back seat," Cabinet Minister Mohammed Mahsoub, who hails from the Islamist Wasat Party, told the session.

But the 270-member council is boycotted by the largely liberal and secular opposition groups ?which has also rejected the presidential appointments to the upper house.

Morsi appointed 90 members to the council on the last day of the referendum on the constitution, in a bid to make it more representative. The other two-thirds of the members were elected last year with no more than seven percent of eligible voters.

But the new appointments maintained the hold of Islamists on the house.

Morsi has had legislative powers for months since a court dissolved the law-making lower house of parliament. He will address the nation later Wednesday to formally hand over legislative powers to the Shura Council.

In its first act, the Shura Council convened to swear in the 90 new members appointed by Morsi.

The government used the session to set its priorities for the coming period.

Speaking to the council, Mahsoub, the minister in charge of parliamentary affairs, said the government will prepare new legislation for parliament to discuss, including a law to regulate the upcoming parliamentary elections, anti-corruption laws, and laws to organize Egypt's efforts to recover money from corrupt officials from the era of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Mahsoub said such bills can be ready as early as next week, when the council convenes again for its regular working session.

He said the government also wants to draft laws to revise maximum and minimum wages, expand social insurance coverage and regulate the media, as well as institute Egypt's first freedom of information act.

"At this critical time for the nation, this respected council is required to pass a set of laws for the state to complete building its institutions," he said.

Amin, the judicial expert, said the constitution will also reduce the number of judges sitting on the country's top court, the Supreme Constitutional Court, from 19 to 11. This was seen by some as a way to get rid of some of the most critical judges of Islamists. Some of them were appointed during the Mubarak era, and Morsi viewed them as holdovers who tried to undermine his authorities.

"The court now will constitute little danger to the legislation to be passed in the coming period," Nasser said. "After the end of the street battle, and after the constitution and new legislature, (the government) will make all the amendments it wants through the law."

The opposition also refused to attend a national dialogue hosted by Morsi's vice president, saying the agenda for the talks are not clear and the disputed constitution was already rushed through. Instead, it says it will contest the upcoming parliamentary elections and hopes to achieve a sizeable representation to challenge the constitution.

The opposition will be watching the Shura Council to see whether new legislation increases civil liberties and addresses poverty and social inequalities ? or increases the ability of the state to crack down on its critics and impose an Islamist rule, as many fear.

Best Science Books 2012: Teaching Biology ? Confessions of a ...

Another list for your reading, gift-giving and collection development pleasure.

Every year for the last bunch of years I?ve been linking to and posting about all the ?year?s best sciencey books? lists that appear in various media outlets and shining a bit of light on the best of the year.

All the previous 2012 lists are here.

This post includes the following: Teaching Biology: Top Books of 2012: Historical Geology.

  • The Goldilocks Planet: The 4 Billion Year Story of Earth?s Climate by Jan Zalasiewicz and Mark Williams
  • What is Life?: How Chemistry becomes Biology by Addy Pross
  • Secret Chambers: The Inside Story of Cells & Complex Life by Martin Brasier
  • Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems, Second Edition by Paul Selden and John Nudds
  • Why Geology Matters: Decoding the Past, Anticipating the Future by J. D. Macdougall
  • Jewels of the Early Earth: Minerals and Fossils of the Precambrian by Bruce L. Stinchcomb
  • Here on Earth: A Twin Biography of the Planet and the Human Race by Tim Flannery
  • Historical Geology by Reed Wicander and James S. Monroe
  • First Life: Discovering the Connections between Stars, Cells, and How Life Began by David Deamer

I?m always looking for recommendations and notifications of book lists as they appear in various media outlets. If you see one that I haven?t covered, please let me know at jdupuis at yorku dot ca or in the comments.

I am picking up most of my lists from Largehearted Boy.

For my purposes, I define science books pretty broadly to include science, engineering, computing, history & philosophy of science & technology, environment, social aspects of science and even business books about technology trends or technology innovation. Deciding what is and isn?t a science book is squishy at best, especially at the margins, but in the end I pick books that seem broadly about science and technology rather than something else completely. Lists of business, history or nature books are among the tricky ones.

And if you wish to support my humble list-making efforts, run on over to Amazon, take a look at Steve Jobs or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks or maybe even something else from today?s list.

Hugo Chavez Health Update: Venezuela President Up, Walking, VP Says, But Doubts Persist

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Vice President Nicolas Maduro surprised Venezuelans with a Christmas Eve announcement that President Hugo Chavez is up and walking two weeks after cancer surgery in Cuba, but the news did little to ease uncertainty surrounding the leader's condition.

Sounding giddy, Maduro told state television Venezolana de Television that he had spoken by phone with Chavez for 20 minutes Monday night. It was the first time a top Venezuelan government official had confirmed talking personally with Chavez since the Dec. 11 operation, his fourth cancer surgery since 2011.

"He was in a good mood," Maduro said. "He was walking, he was exercising."

Chavez supporters reacted with relief, but the statement inspired more questions, given the sparse information the Venezuelan government has provided so far about the president's cancer. Chavez has kept secret various details about his illness, including the precise location of the tumors and the type of cancer. His long-term prognosis remains a mystery.

Dr. Michael Pishvaian, an oncologist at Georgetown University's Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington, said it was an encouraging sign that Chavez was walking, and it indicated he would be able to return to Venezuela relatively soon. But he said the long term outlook remained poor.

"It's definitely good news. It means that he is on the road to recover fully from the surgery," Pishvaian said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "The overall prognosis is still pretty poor. He likely has a terminal diagnosis with his cancer that has come back."

Pishvaian and other outside doctors have said that given the details Chavez has provided about his cancer, it is most likely a soft-tissue sarcoma.

Chavez first underwent surgery for an unspecified type of pelvic cancer in Cuba in June 2011 and went back this month after tests had found a return of malignant cells in the same area where tumors were previously removed.

Venezuelan officials said that, following the six-hour surgery two weeks ago, Chavez suffered internal bleeding that was stanched and a respiratory infection that was being treated.

Maduro's announcement came just hours after Information Minister Ernesto Villegas read a statement saying Chavez was showing "a slight improvement with a progressive trend."

Dr. Carlos Castro, director of the Colombian League against Cancer, an association that promotes cancer prevention, treatment and education, said Maduro's announcement was too vague to paint a clear picture of Chavez's condition.

"It's possible (that he is walking) because everything is possible," Castro told AP. "They probably had him sit in up in bed and take two steps."

"It's unclear what they mean by exercise. Was it four little steps?" he added. "I think he is still in critical condition."

Maduro's near-midnight announcement came just as Venezuelan families were gathering for traditional late Christmas Eve dinners and setting off the usual deafening fireworks that accompany the festivities. There was still little outward reaction on a quiet Christmas morning.

Danny Moreno, a software technician watching her 2-year-old son try out his new tricycle, was among the few people at a Caracas plaza who said she had heard Maduro's announcement. She said she saw a government Twitter message saying an announcement was coming and her mother rushed to turn on the TV.

"We all said, thank God, he's okay," she said, smiling.

Dr. Gustavo Medrano, a lung specialist at the Centro Medico hospital in Caracas, said if Chavez is talking, it suggests he is breathing on his own despite the respiratory infection and is not in intensive care. But Medrano said he remained skeptical about Maduro's comments and could deduce little from them about Chavez's prognosis for recovery.

"I have no idea because if it was such a serious, urgent, important operation, and that was 14 days ago, I don't think he could be walking and exercising after a surgery like that," Medrano said.

Over the weekend, Chavez's ally, Bolivian President Evo Morales, made a lightning visit to Cuba that only added to the uncertainty.

Journalists had been summoned to cover his arrival and departure in Havana, but hours later that invitation was canceled. No explanation was given, though it could have been due to confusion over Morales' itinerary as he apparently arrived later than initially scheduled.

Cuban state media published photos of President Raul Castro receiving Morales at the airport and said he came "to express his support" for Chavez, his close ally, but did not give further details. He left Sunday without making any public comments.

For the second day in a row Tuesday, Morales made no mention of his trip to Cuba during public events in Bolivia.

Yet more questions surround Chavez's political future, with the surgery coming two months after he won re-election to a six-year term.

If he is unable to continue in office, the Venezuelan Constitution calls for new elections to be held. Chavez has asked his followers to back Maduro, his hand-picked successor, in that event.

Venezuelan officials have said Chavez might not return in time for his Jan. 10 inauguration.

Opposition leaders have argued that the constitution does not allow the president's swearing-in to be postponed, and say new elections should be called if Chavez is unable to take the oath on time.

But government officials have said the constitution lets the Supreme Court administer the oath of office at any time if the National Assembly is unable to do it Jan. 10 as scheduled.

Light used to remotely trigger biochemical reactions

Friday, December 14, 2012

Since Edison's first bulb, heat has been a mostly undesirable byproduct of light. Now researchers at Rice University are turning light into heat at the point of need, on the nanoscale, to trigger biochemical reactions remotely on demand.

The method created by the Rice labs of Michael Wong, Ramon Gonzalez and Naomi Halas and reported today in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano makes use of materials derived from unique microbes ? thermophiles ? that thrive at high temperatures but shut down at room temperature.

The Rice project led by postdoctoral fellow Matthew Blankschien and graduate student Lori Pretzer combines enzymes from these creatures with plasmonic gold nanoparticles that heat up when exposed to near-infrared light. That activates the enzymes, which are then able to carry out their functions.

This effectively allows chemical processes to happen at lower temperatures. Because heating occurs only where needed ? at the surface of the nanoparticle, where it activates the enzyme ? the environment stays cooler.

Blankschien thinks that's fascinating.

"Basically, we're getting the benefits of high-temperature manufacturing without needing a high-temperature environment," said Blankschien, who won the Peter and Ruth Nicholas Postdoctoral Fellowship two years ago to work on these ideas. "The challenge was to keep the higher temperature at the nanoparticle, where the enzyme is activated, from affecting the environment around it."

The technique holds great potential for industrial processes that now require heat or benefit from remote triggering with light.

"The implications are pretty exciting," said Wong, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry. "In the chemical industry, there's always a need for better catalytic materials so they can run reactions more inexpensively, more 'green' and more sustainably. You shouldn't run through gallons of solvent to make a milligram of product, even if you happen to be able to sell it for a lot of money."

For industry, the potential energy savings alone may make the Rice process worth investigating. "Here we're using 'free' energy," Wong said. "Instead of needing a big boiler to produce steam, you turn on an energy-efficient light bulb, like an LED. Or open a window."

The particle at the center of the process is a gold nanorod about 10 nanometers wide and 30 long that heats up when hit with near-infrared light from a laser. The rods are just the right size and shape to react to light at around 800 nanometers. The light excites surface plasmons that ripple like water in a pool, in this case emitting energy as heat.

Halas' Rice lab is famous for pioneering the use of gold nanoshells (a related material) to treat cancer by targeting tumors with particles that are bulk heated to kill tumors from the inside. The therapy is now in human trials.

The new research takes a somewhat different tack by heating nanoparticles draped with a model thermophilic enzyme, glucokinase, from Aeropyrum pernix. A. pernix is a microbe discovered in 1996 thriving near hot underwater vents off the coast of Japan. At around 176 degrees Fahrenheit, A. pernix degrades glucose, a process necessary to nearly every living thing. The enzyme can be heated and cooled repeatedly.

In their experiments, Blankschien and Pretzer cloned, purified and altered glucokinase enzymes so they would attach to the gold nanoparticles. The enzyme/nanoparticle complexes were then suspended in a solution and tested for glucose degradation. When the solution was heated in bulk, they found the complexes became highly active at 176 degrees, as expected.

Then the complexes were encapsulated in a gel-like bead of calcium alginate, which helps keeps the heat in but is porous enough to allow enzymes to react with materials around it. Under bulk heating, the enzymes' performance dropped dramatically because the beads insulated the enzymes too well.

But when encapsulated complexes were illuminated by continuous, near-infrared laser light, they worked substantially better than under bulk heating while leaving the solution at near-room temperature. The researchers found the complexes robust enough for weeks of reuse.

"As far-fetched as it sounds, I think chemical companies will be interested in the idea of using light to make chemicals," Wong said. "They're always interested in new technologies that can help make chemical products more cheaply."

He sees other possible uses for the new approach in the production of fuels from degradation of biomass like lignocellulose; for drug manufacture on demand ? maybe from nanoparticle-infused tattoos on the body; or even for lowering blood sugar concentrations as a different way to manage diabetes.

"That we can now make these particles is great," Wong said. "The next exciting part is in thinking about how we can deploy them."

Ryan Huschka, a co-author of the paper, is a former Rice graduate student and now an assistant professor of chemistry at Newman University. Halas is the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a professor of biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics and astronomy and director of Rice's Laboratory for Nanophotonics. Gonzales is an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and also of bioengineering

The research was supported by the Peter and Ruth Nicholas Postdoctoral Fellowship Program administered by the Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, the Rice University Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering Hamill Innovations Award Program, the Rice University Faculty Initiatives Fund, the Robert A. Welch Foundation, the National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellowship, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the National Science Foundation.

California killer admits to two murders in NYC

Rodney Alcala told a Manhattan judge that he wanted to plead guilty to two murder counts so he could get back to?California?and pursue an appeal of his death case.

By Tom Hays,?Associated Press / December 14, 2012

A serial?killer?already sentenced to death in?California?admitted Friday to murdering two other young women in New York City in the 1970s.

Rodney Alcala told a Manhattan judge that he wanted to plead guilty to two murder counts so he could get back to?California?and pursue an appeal of his death case. He had complained in letters to the judge that his jailers in New York wouldn't give him access to a laptop computer and legal records.

Alcala wants the materials "to do the work I need to do on my death penalty case," he said before withdrawing a not guilty plea entered earlier this year.

The 69-year-old Alcala ? a former photographer and one-time dating-show contestant who's been behind bars since 1979 ? appeared in court with his hands shackled and his gray hair in a ponytail.

With the plea, Alcala will receive an automatic term of 25 years to life for his crimes in New York, to be served concurrently with his other convictions.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr., who had his cold-case unit reopen the New York investigation two years ago, said the plea finally brings justice to victims of killings from another different era.

"Rodney Alcala's victims were never forgotten," Vance said in a statement. "Tragically, neither of them lived past the age of 23. Two families were robbed of daughters who never had a chance to have families of their own, grow old, and see the city change and become safer."

Alcala has spent the last 33 years tangling with?California?authorities in a series of trials and overturned convictions. He eventually was found guilty in 2010 of killing four women and a 12-year-old girl in SouthernCalifornia?in the 1970s. He represented himself, offering a defense that involved showing a clip of his 1978 appearance on "The Dating Game" and playing Arlo Guthrie's classic 1967 song "Alice's Restaurant."

While pursuing an appeal in?California, Alcala was indicted last year in the killings of Cornelia Crilley and Ellen Hover in New York, partly on evidence that emerged during his?California?trial, prosecutors said.

Crilley was found strangled with a stocking in her Manhattan apartment in 1971. Hover, a comedy writer and former Hollywood nightclub owner's daughter who had a degree in biology and was seeking a job as a researcher, was living in Manhattan when she vanished in 1977. Her remains were found the next year in the woods on a suburban estate.

Alcala had been eyed in Hover's death for decades and in Crilley's killing for at least several years.

According to court papers, a detective went to talk to Alcala again in 2005. On learning that the investigator was from New York, Alcala asked, "What took you so long?"

Memo to casino operators: just because you build it doesn't mean they will come.

A new study out of the University of Iowa examined how casino growth in the state has influenced gambling by residents. The survey suggests that fewer Iowans gambled overall and also that fewer people have become addicted to gambling despite a recent spurt in gaming facilities. Casino gambling was introduced in Iowa in 1991. There are currently 21 casinos in Iowa, all but three licensed by the state. (The others are owned and operated by Native American tribes.)

The findings could affect expansion plans by casino operators and may influence how policymakers in Iowa, who must approve new casinos, view adding more gaming facilities, says Donald Black, a psychiatry professor at the UI who has been studying gamblers and gambling habits since the late 1990s.

"It seems society reaches a saturation point beyond which additional gambling opportunities won't capture more people," says Black, whose study was published in the journal Annals of Clinical Psychiatry. "And that applies to problem gamblers, too. They all seem to adjust to it."

The survey asked 356 residents in eastern Iowa 18 years of age and older about their gambling activity. The respondents were slotted according to the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), a known measure that ranks gambling behavior on a five-point scale, from no problems to addiction.

Black and his colleagues compared the results to similar surveys done in 1995 and 1989. The researchers report that the percentage of people who didn't gamble had risen to 83 percent in the most recent survey, versus 72 percent in the 1995 poll. Moreover, the percentage of non-gamblers in the latest survey was nearly as high as the 86 percent of Iowans who reported not gambling in the 1989 pollbefore any casinos had been built in the state.

The prevalence of addicted gamblers, those with the highest ranking on the SOGS scale, also dropped in the most recent survey, from nearly 2 percent of respondents in the 1995 survey to 1.4 percent in the latest poll. This, despite a doubling in the number of casinosfrom 10 in 1995 (including three racetracks that added slots that year) to 21 currently.

Still, the number of self-reported gambling addicts was far higher than the 0.1 percent who claimed a gambling addiction in 1989.

That suggests "casinos have had a great impact (on problem gamblers)," Black notes, "but it has stabilized."

Bolstering that notion, the percentage of residents who say they gamble occasionally (ranked 1 or 2 on the SOGS scale) had dropped to 14 percent in the latest survey from 23 percent in the 1995 survey.

Black adds that the results, although limited to Iowa, should hold true elsewhere. He said the findings substantiate a theory, championed by Howard Shaffer, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, who looked at the impact of gambling in casino-rich Nevada and found that the number of people addicted to gambling was not disproportionately higher than other states.

Black likens the public's fascination with casinos as a child with a new toy. Sure, it's interesting at first, but at some point "it's lost its novelty," he says.

Gambling was legalized in Iowa in 1975 with the introduction of bingo. A state lottery followed in 1985, and dog and horse tracks were added in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Riverboat casinos were legalized in 1989, and the first three casinos, in Bettendorf, Dubuque, and Davenport, opened two years later. The state collected $116 million from casino gambling last fiscal year, according to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

The survey was conducted between 2006 and 2008 during a family study of problem gambling. The UI partnered with the Center for Social and Behavioral Research at the University of Northern Iowa on the poll.

Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer's Affair ? My thoughts ...

Dad doesn?t like me to talk about politics, even if it is about Malaysia, so if he requests, the post will be removed.?

If you don?t know recently ?People?s Action Party, Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer, 44, yesterday announced his resignation after admitting to party leaders on Saturday that he had an affair with a People?s Association employee- Ms Laura Ong, a constituency director of Pasir Ris West Constituency Office.

In my post I am not going to give the usual typical comments ?All men are horny?, ?All men will cheat? ?because that is very disrespectful and stereotyping. Just like I don?t like people to say ?All women go for money/status?.

Instead, I shall focus on the following issues ? Why I feel it is a good move to remove Michael Palmer from his position? What motivates powerful men to risk it all and cheat? Why cheat despite trophy wives? How do women and men perceive cheating?

Mr Palmer and his wife

This is not very uncommon. There have always been cases where the powerful+famous have been caught for cheating?

President Clinton in 1997 with his affair with Lewinsky; Mayor of New York City Rudy in 1999, an affair while he was married; Governor McGreevey of New Jersey cheated with a man in 2000; New York Governor Spitzer cheated with an escort in 2008; Governor Sanford of South Carolina cheated on his wife in 2009; Senator John Edwards in 2007 and professional golfer Tiger Woods in 2009.

In Singapore, very recently, we also had the NG BOON GAY + Cecilia Sue incident.

Ms Laura Ong

?1) Why I feel it is a good move to remove Michael Palmer from his position?

Some have commented that sacking was too harsh as there are more important qualities for politicians than whether or not he can be a good husband.

I think that comment is very valid because we don?t sack IT professionals, accountants, doctors etc for committing affairs but are harsher against politicians because they are public figures. It is definitely true that factors like sex drive, cheating tendencies has nothing to do with performance.

However, I think this move is very necessary+correct on several levels:

1) In Asian societies, people don?t just respect a leader for this ability but also for his virtue/ethics.

This is even more so in the context of the public service where ETHICS- doing the right thing, is seen as an important traits. Many MPs who are highly popular are so because of their perceived kindness etc and not because of their ability.

People tend to draw such inferences? If he cannot be ethical in his own personal life, he cannot be ethical in the workplace as well?.

Politicians in Singapore are expected to uphold the shared values we have as a nation. In this case, Palmer violated ?Nation before community and society above self: Putting the interests of society ahead of the individual? and ?Family as the basic unit of society: The family is identified as the most stable fundamental building block of the nation?

Mr Palmer and his Wife, by: Asian Tatler

?

2) PAP has been getting less popular as can be seen from the previous election results in 2011

If Palmer does not quit, this may worsen because most Singaporeans are still very conservative and ?traditional asians?. Furthermore, keeping him will be something that is extremely hard to justify.

?

3) In doing so, we preserve our values as a nation

It has always been the case?whereby?if a political figure cheats, he automatically resigns or is removed from his position.

In doing so, I think this somewhat helps to deter others from?commuting?adultery. One would think ?wah see the consequences so jia lat, don?t do liao?

In a sense, sacking gives a clear direct message to Singaporeans ?This is not something we support and believe is wrong and disappointing?.

Imagine what will happen if nothing is done to those who cheated?

Dianne palmer

2) What motivates powerful men to cheat and risk their reputation, career etc in the process?

A. Illusion of Increased Virility + Attractiveness

Based on Askmen, which by the way I feel is?indisputably?has one of the best relationship guides, Men think they?re gaining an illusion of virility, beauty, and youth as well as social status when they can cavort with a younger mistress.?Nothing lifts the old self-esteem like discovering that other women still desire you sexually. When in long-term relationships + the?emasculating?feeling of ageing (losing physical attractiveness), men may begin to question their sexual marketability, which will lead some of them to sow their clandestine wild seeds.

PSYCHOLOGY TODAY also proves the above point on validation

One major factor that makes affairs popular is common dependence on getting a positive reflected sense of self from the people around us, the clothes we wear, the house we live in, and the car we drive. We light up when someone finds us attractive or thinks we?re special. We feel desirable because someone desires us, and we often spend our days (and nights) trying to find someone to validate us.

When other-validated intimacy fades in marriage, as it inevitably does, many people turn to affairs to pump themselves up, regardless of wealth or status. This surprises us because we expect famous accomplished people to believe in themselves before or after they ?made it.? But many are painfully insecure despite their success, and need constant validation, adoration, and limelight. This combination of insecurity and grandiosity is the downfall of many ?stars.?

?

B. The illusion of invulnerability:?They think they won?t get caught. They also assume that even if they do get caught, they won?t get in trouble because they have the resources to cover it up.

C. Ample opportunities for temptation: Powerful men have a higher market value than those with lesser power. Wealth, fame and status are attractive and iressistable to many women. ?In other words, it?s easy for these men to find willing sex partners.

D. Adrenaline dependency: Many powerful men have positions that require a lot of responsibility and authority. They perform well under high stress, and they continually need and enjoy excitement or challenges to drive them forward. An affair gives them the same type of exhilaration in their private life. Sometimes, the fear of being caught can act as an ideal adrenaline charge for the risk junkie.

E. Idolization ?>?Narcissism?and Egocentricness: Powerful men tend to be surrounded by people who protect them, idolize them and even ?enable? their vices in order to remain inside their influential orbit. Being surrounded by people who don?t necessarily challenge your decisions or give you honest feedback about yourself is bound to have an effect on your ego, self-image and your sense of propriety and limits.

F. Typical reasons like novelty- ?Boredom and relationship ruts are common reasons couples cite for infidelity. They can be unhappy with their lives in general or dissatisfied in their relationship. An affair can be a passive aggressive way to deal with things especially if one party is conflict avoidant and does not wish to raise this issue.

After 25 years of marriage, if both spouses don?t make an effort to keep the intimacy, freshness and fun alive, it?s not at all unusual for a married couple to get into a relationship rut.

?

3) Why do young women want to risk their reputation by associating with powerful men?

In the perception of the young women, who also risk their reputation to cheat with a powerful man. I would believe that it is due to the vestigial fantasy of the more powerful+older man who they feel will give them increased power, ?status or take care of them like a sugar daddy.

The affair can also help them look good in front of their friends. They use their mixed-power flings as social trophies/conversation pieces. There?s always the lure of the juicy story to tell their girlfriends.

The point on power is important. Women think they?re gaining an illusion of status when they pursue these relationships. By associating themselves with an elite, they feel an increased power.

However, in such instances, ?there is a POWER PARADOX because most of the time, they look abased or self-trivializing instead. The arrangement broadcasts to the world: ?Don?t take me seriously?. This is so powerful that even if the woman herself has accomplishments and achievements of her own, no one takes her seriously if she were to make such an error.

?

3) Why do people cheat despite trophy wives?

I think this is very much due to the reasons on why people even want trophy wives in the first place.

There is something called ??the trophy wife syndrome.? Greater than half of the men with means, status, power or fame typically pursue trophy wives.

Why? There exists a desire to get ?egotistical revenge? on all of those men and women who doubted them, underestimated them or rejected them before. It goes like this ??Oh ? so you perceived me as dating nothing but ugly chicks before I made it, huh? LOOK AT ME NOW! My wife is a swimsuit model, has a masters degree and is rich! Take that!!?

And then problem sets in when your dream girl becomes REAL. These human female ?trophies,? after a while, begin to lose their appeal. The novelty of capturing the prom queen, Playboy centerfold, or sexy valedictorian wears off.

If a relationship between a man and a woman is not built on genuine friendship and true love, you can forget about it. That highly driven, very successful guy is going to cheat on his trophy wife. This is guaranteed.

?

?

4) How do men and women react differently to cheating?

Barry X. Kuhle, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Scranton did a study on this:

?Relative to women, men are more distressed by sexual infidelity, and

women are more upset over emotional infidelity, relative to men,?

Men, Kuhle says, focus more on the sexual aspects of infidelity, asking unfaithful partners questions like ?Was she/he better in bed than me?? and ?How many times did you have sex with him/her??. Women, on the other hand, are more troubled by the emotional side of cheating, asking ?Who do you love more??, ?Who is prettier??

You can view this clip on Closer where Clive Owen confronts Julia Roberts:

Here are one of the rare times I use vulgarities on my blog to reiterate what the clip is about

He asked ?Is he a good fuck??, ?Better than me??, ?Did you do it here (His place)??, ?Did you think of me??, ?did you cum??, ?How many times??, ?How??, ?What does he taste like??

Girl: Why is the sex so important?

Guy: Because I am a fucking cave man! (LOL)

And he only asked once ?Did you ever love me??

Anyway, my favourite line in this whole dialogue is ? ?He tastes like you, only sweeter? which also happens to be from one of my favourite songs ? Thanks for the Memories by FallOut Boy

?

The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

Kuhle, an evolutionary psychologist, explains that the fear of cuckoldry could be why men and women respond differently to cheating?

?Modern men have inherited an evolved wisdom from a long line of ancestral men who could never be 100% certain that a child was actually theirs,? he explains.

In other words, men were, and still are, afraid of being tricked into raising a child that isn?t theirs and are therefore more concerned with the sexual side of cheating rather than the emotional side.

As women don?t share this concern, they worry more about the love, time, and attention their partner is lavishing on another person. I suspect that this could be linked to the fear of their man not wanting to provide for them+family anymore but rather the other woman.

In conclusions, here are some traits one can avoid in future partners to reduce probability of cheating ? Conflict avoidance, thrill seekers, egoistical people, people with poor self-control, a relationship based on superficial reasons, and the list goes on.

Gonna go for my dinner date now. Will update more soon

Roundup: AC Milan reaches Italian Cup quarters

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:58 p.m. ET Dec. 13, 2012

MILAN (AP) - AC Milan beat second-division Reggina 3-0 Thursday night to set up a showdown with Serie A leader Juventus in the Italian Cup quarterfinals.

Colombian defender Mario Yepes put Milan ahead in the 51st minute on a snowy night at San Siro, 17-year-old French forward M'Baye Niang doubled the lead in the 79th and Giampaolo Pazzini added a goal in the 81st.

Juventus beat Cagliari 1-0 Wednesday.

Yepes scored with a header following a cross from Urby Emanuelsson before Niang slotted a shot past the goalkeeper to finish off a counterattack for his first goal since transferring from Caen. Pazzini's goal counted even though replays showed he was offside.

Milan's leading scorer Stephen El Shaarawy never left the bench.

Milan is seventh in Serie A, 14 points behind Juventus.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Carlos Aranda scored in stoppage time to give Real Zaragoza a 1-0 win at Levante in the first leg of their Copa del Rey fifth-round matchup.

After failing to threaten Levante's goal through 91 minutes, Aranda collected Leo Franco's long goal kick and lifted a delicate chip over goalkeeper Kaylor Navasy. Aranda played for Levante last season.

The second leg of the total-goals series will be played in Zaragoza on Jan. 9. Zaragoza hosts Levante in the league on Sunday.

Both goalkeepers made several saves to keep the match in the Canary Islands scoreless through 67 minutes when second-half substitute Ruben Castro put the visitors ahead with a curling volley in the 67th minute, and Macauley Chrisantus tied it for the hosts in the 84th by pushing in a short cross from Thievy Bifouma.

The second leg in Seville will be played on Jan. 10.

---

PARIS (AP) - Fourth-place Saint-Etienne tied 0-0 at Bordeaux and is five points behind third-place Marseille in the French league.

Looking to bounce back from a 1-0 home loss to bitter rival Lyon last weekend, Saint-Etienne almost took the lead in the second minute when winger Romain Hamouma burst into the penalty area and hit a low shot which drew a save from goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso.

The lively Hamouma then set up top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 14th but he shot wide from a good position, and Carrasso was saved by his crossbar in the 33rd when defender Faouzi Ghoulam tried from 25 yards.
