Secret Service agent leaves gun on Romney's plane
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? A Secret Service agent left a gun in the bathroom of a plane carrying Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
A reporter discovered the gun while the plane was flying from Florida to Indiana on Wednesday. It was quickly retrieved by a Secret Service agent. The weapon belonged to an agent assigned to Romney's security detail.
In Washington, Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan says the agency is aware of the incident and that the matter will be handled internally. He would not discuss who left the gun or how it was misplaced.
The agent involved was not on the afternoon flight to Tampa, Fla., the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney is scheduled to accept the presidential nomination on Thursday.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Rivier University has a position available for a full time Educational Resource Center/Reference Librarian. The Cho Educational Resource Center (ERC) is a curriculum support library designed to serve the research needs of the University?s education students. The ERC is located in the Benoit Education Center, a facility separate from the main (Regina) Library. The ERC is fully part of the University?s Library system and the Library?s User Services Department.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee all services and daily functions of the ERC such as circulation, reserves, shelving and the like. Assist in developing and administering an operating budget for the ERC. Plan hours of operation for the ERC. Provide reference service to students, faculty, staff, and other ERC and library patrons using the full range of technology aids such as e-mail, chat, texting as well as traditional modes of interaction. Provide classroom library instruction, create and edit LibGuides and participate in the library?s Information Literacy Program. Collect and compile library statistics pertaining to the ERC. Prepare related administrative/ operations reports. In a team setting, edit and revise the ERC and Library web page. Serve as library liaison and collection development specialist for Education faculty and other subject areas as assigned. Assist with selecting database and reference resources. Learn and implement new resources and technologies as they relate to reference and instruction services. Assist with promoting library services, resources and events. Assist in the coordination and development of materials for library events. Keep abreast of current developments and trends in the field, particularly in technology. Attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS degree. An MLS degree candidate (near completion) may be considered if applicant has sufficient relevant experience. The ability and willingness to support the mission of the University, in all daily activities. Experience working in a library, academic library experience preferred. Skills related to reference and circulation services, including database searching, and experience conducting reference interviews. Some web page editing and design experience, as well as library instruction experience. Strong planning, supervisory and writing skills. Ability to show initiative, prioritize, and complete projects in a timely manner. Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred: Advanced web editing skills. Experience with creating and editing LibGuides and online tutorials. Experience working with curriculum-based materials and/or an Education background. Experience providing library instruction in accord with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Some experience with collection development, writing reports, and developing/administering a budget.

Because Mr. Hejna and his colleagues believed that the offer fell woefully short of the value of their technology, Enounce declined Apple's offer.

Thereafter, and unbeknownst to Enounce, Apple began to extensively using Enounce's patented technologies by incorporating them into key consumer electronics products, including but not limited to the iPhone and iPad, on which Apple makes billions of dollars in U.S. sales annually. Apple took these actions with blatant knowledge and disregard for the legal rights of Enounce. Moreover, Apple began to advertise and tout the ability of its digital media players to play back media files at variable speeds, the precise technology found in Enounce patents. For example, Apple describes its QuickTime product as a "sophisticated media player" and further states, "want to speed through a movie or slow things down? Israel says 6 Palestinians wounded in West Bank firebomb attack; Jewish extremists suspected
JERUSALEM - The Israeli military says six Palestinians have been wounded in a suspected firebomb attack in the West Bank.
The six were traveling in a taxi Thursday night when the firebomb was allegedly thrown into the car. The military suspects Jewish extremist to be behind the attack.
Extremist settlers often attack Palestinians and their property in a campaign they call "price tag." It's meant to retaliate for either army action against settlers or Palestinian attacks. Several more firebombs were hurled earlier Thursday toward settler vehicles in the West Bank.
The military says it is still searching for the culprits.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, saying Israel "will do everything to catch those responsible and bring them to justice."

1. Ryan embodies the most unpopular GOP policies
The "good news" about Romney tapping Ryan is that "this ticket now has a vision," one GOP strategist tells Politico. "The bad news is that vision is basically just a chart of numbers used to justify policies that are extremely unpopular." Romney now owns Ryan's plans to voucherize Medicare for anyone under 55, privatize Social Security, zero out most taxes for rich investors like Romney, and criminalize not only all abortion but maybe even in-vitro fertilization ? all political losers... and relatively mainstream GOP positions, says Laura Clawson at Daily Kos. "What's especially fun about the Ryan choice is that he's a problem for Republicans because he is the embodiment of their policies."

2. He alienates more voters than he entices
Lots of conservatives are very excited and energized by the Ryan pick ? "Rush Limbaugh and Rupert Murdoch appear ecstatic about his elevation," says Howard Kurtz at The Daily Beast. But the House GOP budget wonk also "has a long paper trail that could alienate moderate swing voters." Ryan's Medicare plan alone poses special dangers for Romney in senior-rich Florida, a must-win state. And Florida has another group Romney just threw out by tapping Ryan: Jews, says Peter Beinart at?The Daily Beast. The GOP's big push to siphon off Jewish voters might have worked if Romney had stuck with his earlier fiscal and social moderation, "but any trace of that Romney died when he chose Ryan. The race for the American Jewish vote is now probably over," and Obama won by default.?
3. Americans hate Congress, and Ryan ties Romney to it
Before picking Ryan, "Romney had run an outsider campaign and kept a healthy distance from a historically unpopular Congress," says Russell Berman at?The Hill. Now, he's "tied inextricably to congressional Republicans." We don't know yet "whether voters' disdain for Congress will in any way rub off on their assessments of Ryan," says Gallup pollster Frank Newport. There are two groups of Republican operatives anonymously trashing Ryan, says Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog: One faction fears he will help lead Romney to defeat and the other "believe[s] Ryan will hurt the party up and down the ballot." GOP House and Senate candidates, especially those in tight races, just "don't know how to run with the 'kill Medicare' guy near the top of the ballot," and many of them are conspicuously distancing themselves from Ryan. As one top GOP consultant tells Politico, the addition of Ryan is "very not helpful down ballot ? very."
5. "GOP pros" are just known to panic for no good reason?
This type of off-record griping is "an ancient Washington game" among political operatives, says Rick Moran at?American Thinker. "The 'I told you so' pros" won't get stung if Romney wins, and if he loses they can "point at this piece ? and others like it down the road ? and claim prescience." In fact, "I'm reassured ? indeed, encouraged ? indeed, buoyed!" by the GOP hacks trash-talking Ryan, says William Kristol at?The Weekly Standard. The "pseudo-sophisticated conventional wisdom" from these cowards is "a terrific contrarian indicator" of the state of the race: "When 'GOP pros' are most full of fear and apprehension about Republican prospects ? for example, Reagan in 1980, Gingrich in 1994, and the Tea Party in 2010 ? Republicans tend to do well."

Hoke County Emergency Communications gets national certification
RAEFORD - Hoke County Emergency Communications was one of three North Carolina agencies awarded certification from the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials on Monday.
Hoke met or exceeded the minimum training standards for the Association's International Project 33 Training Program Certification-2010, according to a news release. Gaston and Durham counties were also certified.
Public safety agencies use the program to ensure their training meets national standards, the release said.
The agencies will be recognized during the Distinguished Achievers Breakfast at APCO's 78th Annual Conference in Minneapolis later this month.

Similar payout, or ?net benefit,? scenarios emerged for cats. For common problems, the costs of health insurance again outweighed its benefits under all nine policies. Even so, these calculations ignore the probability of such major problems occurring, having been prepared ex-post rather than ex-ante. It is thus likely that pet health insurance isn?t economically practical, even in such extreme circumstances.
That isn?t to say you should never buy pet health insurance. If you?re a strictly emotional pet owner, pet health insurance could provide you some peace of mind, especially if you know you would do anything for your pet in a medical emergency but can?t afford to cover thousands of dollars of treatments.
Just because you fall on the emotional end of the spectrum doesn?t mean you need to throw economics entirely by the wayside. If you decide to buy pet health insurance, it?s important to shop around, as policies widely vary across and within providers. You will want to compare:
- Monthly and annual premiums
- Deductibles
- Co-pays
- Caps
- Coverage provisions (i.e. prescription drug coverage) and exclusions
Avoid policies with high premiums, high deductibles, high co-pays, and low caps. You should also avoid plans that fail to cover extreme conditions that might necessitate costly care (such as cancer) or chronic conditions that require recurring, and thus costly, care. Finally, don?t pay extra for routine wellness care coverage, as it?s ?not worth the cost? according to Consumer Reports.
Keep in mind that no plan will cover pre-existing conditions, nor do most policies cover congenital or hereditary conditions (though Trupanion covers both, subject to certain limitations). It?s also important to remember that as your pet ages, premiums increase while coverage declines under most plans.
Other factors you should consider when buying pet health insurance include:
- The requirement of a physical exam to receive coverage, if any
- The duration of the waiting period before coverage begins, if any
- Coverage when traveling with your pet, if any
- Limitations on vets and animal hospitals
- The availability of discounts for insuring multiple pets
Before settling on a plan, be sure to compare its allowances to your vet?s fees. If the allowances are dwarfed by the fees, it?s best to move on to other policy options.
Also, be sure to diligently read whatever plan you ultimately choose. As Consumer Reports editor Tobie Stanger warns, ?Look very carefully at the fine print so that you?re not surprised when you file a claim and find that it?s denied.?
For those who can?t get past the negative net economic benefit of pet health insurance, it is still possible to hedge against veterinarian bills by incorporating pet health costs into your regular and emergency budgets. To do so, you can deposit the money that you would have spent on health insurance premiums in a basic savings account instead.
Regardless of whether you choose to insure your pet, there are ways to reduce veterinarian bills while still protecting your pup.
