LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Police arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a driver plowed into crowds at the Venice Beach boardwalk, a seemingly intentional hit-and-run that killed an Italian woman on her honeymoon and injured 11 others.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, was arrested after he walked into a police station in neighboring Santa Monica about two hours after the incident and told police that he was involved.

Campbell, who authorities said lived in Los Angeles, remained jailed Sunday on $1 million bail. Authorities did not know of any motive.

Security video taken at the popular tourist site showed a man parking a black car, stepping out and surveying the leisurely scene for several minutes before getting back into the vehicle and speeding into the crowd. Hundreds of people who had been walking or sitting at cafes raced to get out of the way before the vehicle sped out of sight.

Witnesses reported a horrifying aftermath.

People were " stumbling around, blood dripping down their legs, looking confused not knowing what had happened, people screaming," said Louisa Hodge, who described "blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk."

The Italian woman was identified as Alice Gruppioni, 32. Her family in Bologna told the Italian news agency LaPresse that she had been on her honeymoon after a July 31 wedding.

Authorities said another person was critically injured. Two others were in serious condition, and eight suffered less serious injuries.

The crash was not far from the scene where an elderly driver sped through an open-air farmer's market in Santa Monica in 2003, killing 10 people and injuring more than 70 others.

Investigators said George Weller, who was 86 at the time, mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake and then panicked. He was doing up to 60 mph when he plowed through the market. Weller was convicted of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and was sentenced to probation.

It was not immediately clear how fast the car in Saturday's crash was going.

According to security video and witness accounts, the driver parked next to the Cadillac Hotel and twice walked out to the boardwalk before getting into the Dodge Avenger and accelerating, swerving around yellow poles meant to prevent cars from getting into the pedestrian-only area and onto the boardwalk.

"I heard a big 'boom, boom,' like the sound of someone going up and down the curb, it was super loud," said Alex Hagan, 22, who was working the desk at the Cadillac Hotel and watched the scene unfold from the start.

The driver knocked over two mannequins and then started hitting people, swerving from side to side and often running straight into them.

Video showed the car hitting at least three vendors who were sitting at their sales booths.

Two women who appeared to be in their 60s were also struck, Hagan said.

Many people ran after the car, screaming and cursing as it sped away, he said.

Golestan Alipour, bartender at Candle Cafe & Grill, said the large sedan carefully maneuvered between a storefront and metal poles that had been erected to prevent anyone from driving onto the boardwalk. A free-standing ATM barely slowed his race toward the crowds.

"The restaurant was full. Everybody ran," Alipour said.

The car went on for several blocks, knocking down a fortune teller who had a table on the boardwalk, a couple selling jewelry and a woman who does tattooing, Alipour said.

Authorities at the scene searched for evidence across the boardwalk, which is in a part of Los Angeles known for eccentricities. The 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt that runs along the sand a few hundred yards from the ocean is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach. It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends.

Police found a car nearby that they believe belonged to the driver, he said.

Hodge said she and her friend, Ashley Taylor, had made note of the numbers walking along the seaside.

"It was a really nice day, there were tons of people out, in fact, we were talking about how packed it was, because we were having a hard time getting through all the people," Hodge said.

The two women stopped to buy ice cream and a couple of hats, which may have saved their lives. They stepped out of a store to see the aftermath, as emergency crews arrived and started putting victims on tarps.

Hodge saw one man and woman lying next to each other, wearing head braces, barely able to move.

"They were just laying next to each other and grasping hands," Hodge said, "just a man and a woman holding hands."

Top US officials meet to discuss embassy threat

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Top U.S. officials met Saturday to review the threat of a terrorist attack that led to the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world and a global travel warning to Americans. President Barack Obama was briefed following the session, the White House said.

Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, led the meeting and then joined Lisa Monaco, Obama's assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, in briefing the president, the White House said in a statement.

"The president has received frequent briefings over the last week on all aspects of the potential threat and our preparedness measures," according to the statement.

Among those at the meeting Saturday afternoon were the secretaries of state, defense and homeland security and the directors of the FBI, CIA and the National Security Agency, according to the White House. Also attending was Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In an interview Friday with ABC News, Dempsey said officials had determined there was "a significant threat stream" and that the threat was more specific than previous ones. The "intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests," he said.

The global travel warning was the first such alert since an announcement before the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The warning comes less than a year since the deadly September attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and with the Obama administration and Congress determined to prevent any similar breach of an American embassy or consulate.

The State Department's warning urged U.S. travelers to take extra precautions overseas. It cited potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists, and noted that previous attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats.

Travelers were advised to sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The State Department said the potential for terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula. The diplomatic facilities affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest Africa to Afghanistan.

U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen, the home of al-Qaida's most dangerous affiliate and the network blamed for several notable plots against the United States, from the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit to the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

"Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," a department statement said.

Yemen's president, Abdo Rabby Mansour Hadi, met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday, where both leaders cited strong counterterrorism cooperation. This past week, Yemen's military reported a U.S. drone strike killed six alleged al-Qaida militants in the group's southern strongholds.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said the embassy threat was linked to al-Qaida and concerned the Middle East and Central Asia.

"In this instance, we can take a step to better protect our personnel and, out of an abundance of caution, we should," Royce said. He declined to say if the National Security Agency's much-debated surveillance program helped reveal the threat.

Zimbabwe officials: Mugabe wins with 61 percent

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Zimbabwe's longtime President Robert Mugabe won 61 percent of the presidential vote, trailed by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai at 33 percent, election officials announced Saturday.

Mugabe, 89 and in power for 33 years, has another five-year term in office, according to the results.

Mugabe's party won 158 of the 210 parliament seats, giving it a two-thirds majority in the legislature that enables it to make amendments to the new constitution and existing laws, according to the results announced by the state Election Commission. Tsvangirai's party captured 50 seats and two went to independent candidates.

Tsvangirai earlier Saturday rejected the results as fraudulent and called for fresh elections. He urged a peaceful response to the alleged massive rigging by Mugabe's ZANU-PF party.

Tsvangirai said his Movement for Democratic Change party has in its possession evidence of massive rigging by Mugabe's ZANU-PF party in the just-ended polls and will challenge results from Wednesday's voting.

"People of Zimbabwe must be given another chance to participate in a free, fair and credible election. They have been shortchanged by a predetermined election," he said.

Tsvangirai told a news conference that the outcome of the polls has extended Mugabe's rule which has plunged the nation into economic and political turmoil.

He said Mugabe's victory in the polls has "dashed people's hopes and aspirations."

"There is no celebration, there is national mourning," Tsvangirai said.

He said his party will not "participate in any government institutions" in protest but stopped short of saying it will boycott its reduced seats in the Harare parliament.

Mugabe's loyalist army and police have set up security posts in Harare Saturday, apparently in case there are any protest demonstrations.

"We are rejecting the results because they are fraudulent," Tsvangirai said. "We will go back to our people. Our people are the ones hurting. Our people are disciplined. We don't want a violent resolution to this crisis."

He said a complete audit is needed of the shambolic voters' lists, which was only made available at the time of the election.

Official results have shown large disparities between votes cast for Tsvangirai's party in the violent and disputed polls in 2008 and a higher turnout than at the March referendum when all parties supported a "yes" vote and voters' lists were not used.

Tsvangirai's party lost several seats in its Harare urban strongholds by massive margins compared to their overwhelming votes in 2008.

In one Harare constituency, Tsvangirai's party won with 9,538 votes to 8,190 captured by Mugabe's party. In 2008 the same district voted for the MDC candidate, Tendai Biti, by about 8,300 ballots against Mugabe's 2,500 votes.

"It is ZANU-PF's imagination that they have won this election, they know the truth," Tsvangirai said Saturday. "We have been robbed."

Independent monitors have charged that as many as 750,000 voters were prevented from casting their ballots on Wednesday because of irregularities in voters' lists.

They allege thousands of unregistered voters were allowed to vote.

The continent-wide African Union and regional monitors of the Southern African Development Community, or SADC, have generally endorsed the elections as peaceful, but have expressed misgivings over how voting numbers might have been manipulated and have demanded a full account of voter numbers from the official state election body before passing their final judgment on whether the polls were free, fair and credible.

Observers generally commended actual polling for being free of violence that has dominated campaigning against Tsvangirai in his two previous challenges for the presidency in 2002 and 2008.

Berlusconi aides seek presidential pardon

ROME (AP) ? A Silvio Berlusconi loyalist warned on Saturday of a possible "civil war" unless ex-premier's punishment for tax-fraud conviction is not lifted, as his aides maneuvered to win a presidential pardon so he can avoid a prison term and a ban on holding public office.

Berlusconi stalwarts also urged the 10 million Italians who voted for the conservative leader in this year's election to fill the streets of Rome on Sunday.

Italy's highest court on Thursday upheld Berlusconi's four-year prison sentence, the first time that the media mogul was definitely convicted and sentenced in two decades of trials and other criminal probes. A law to reduce prison overcrowding slashes his sentence to one year and since he is over 70, he can choose house confinement or perform social services instead of going to prison.

Berlusconi insists he is a victim of prosecutors and judges who he says have leftist sympathies.

"In this country, democracy has been mutilated" by the high court's decision, Daniela Santanche, one of Berlusconi's closest associates, told Sky TG24 TV.

His political associates and party officials pressed their "save Silvio" strategy on several fronts after huddling with him on Friday evening. Berlusconi, in a recorded video message a few hours after Italy's supreme court upheld the conviction, had sounded shaken but defiant, vowing to galvanize his party's base.

Renato Brunetta, a leader of Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, said Saturday he and a former Senate president, Renato Schifani, have requested a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, who can issue pardons.

Napolitano hasn't publicly commented about the prospects of a pardon. But, according to the Italian constitution, only Berlusconi, his lawyer or a family member can ask for a presidential pardon, which could wipe out or lessen the punishment but not the conviction itself.

Fueling political tension was longtime Berlusconi loyalist Sandro Bondi's assessment that Italy "must find a solution or risk civil war" if the 76-year-old billionaire businessman is forced to serve time and is stripped of his Senate seat.

Whatever the government's fate, Berlusconi isn't about to start serving his sentence or lose his seat. He has until mid-October to decide whether to serve the year's sentence at home or perform some socially useful service. And Senate procedures to strip him of his post will likely take months.

Exposing raw nerves in Premier Enrico Letta's coalition, Deputy Economy Minister Stefano Fassina denounced the request for a pardon as "an unacceptable provocation" and Bondi's words as "bordering on subversion."

Letta's fragile coalition risks collapse if Berlusconi's party withdraws support.

Berlusconi's political heir, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano has said that maybe he and fellow ministers who support the media mogul should quit in a show of anger over the conviction.

Letta's center-left Democratic Party won the most votes in February's election for Parliament but not enough to govern alone with a majority in both chambers of the legislature. Democrats reluctantly agreed to a coalition with Berlusconi's conservatives. The alliance has been fraught with tensions for weeks before Berlusconi's conviction made its long-term survival uncertain.

Austin, Texas, Gets Green Light on High-Tech Bus Fleet

The Austin, Texas, Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority will launch a new fleet of high-tech buses next year that will give them priority when passing through an intersection.

The 40-bus fleet called MetroRapid will be rolling out on two of Austin?s public bus routes next spring. Each red and gray bus will be equipped with traffic signal priority capability. The GPS technology communicates with the city?s traffic signal management system so when a bus approaches a green traffic light, that light will remain green for an additional seven seconds so the bus can pass through without stopping, according to the authority?s Vice President and CIO Joe Iannello.

?Through this collaboration, our [GPS] system that knows the location of the bus and other information is communicating with the city?s system in order to provide that handshake,? Iannello said.

The traffic signal priority is expected to keep the buses running faster to help them arrive at bus stops on time. Iannello said while he considers Capital Metro to be an early adopter of the traffic signal capability, U.S.-based transportation agencies are beginning to use the technology.

Last year the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City launched a test pilot of traffic signal priority technology along the Select Bus Service (SBS) corridors to reduce rider commute times and improve bus arrival performance.

Riders will also see new technology integrations when they arrive at the MetroRapid bus stations once the new fleet is launched. Each station will display digital message signs that provide real-time data on predicted arrival times for each bus. Although buses are expected to run every 10 minutes, the predicted arrival times will factor in possible traffic delays or anything else that could impact schedules.

Next year, MetroRapid riders will also have the option to pay their fare using a mobile ticketing app.

The free app, currently in development, has no official name yet, but will be available on iOS, Android and Windows smartphones and tablets. Scanners will be available at the front and back bus doors so riders can validate their tickets upon entry using the app.

Validation of mobile tickets will only be available on MetroRapid buses, but the mobile ticketing app will allow riders to purchase tickets for any of Capital Metro?s bus and rail services.

Each bus will also be equipped with free Wi-Fi, a service that Iannello said will create safer conditions on the road.? Wi-Fi availability on public buses gives commuters the chance to check email on board instead of while driving themselves in vehicles.

?It?s not only high productivity, but it?s also safe as opposed to somebody driving and checking their messages,? Iannello said. ?They?ll be able to be on one of these nice buses and having that free Internet service.?

According to John Julitz, a spokesman for Capital Metro, 21,000 riders are expected to board MetroRapid buses per day when both routes are in service. The two bus routes alone serve 25 percent of the entire Capital Metro service area.

To fund the project, Capital Metro received a $38 million grant from the Federal Transit Authority, which will cover 80 percent of the project?s $47.6 million total cost. The remaining 20 percent of funding will come from local sources.

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

URBANA, Ill. (AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

Fate of Indiana school grading system uncertain

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana's A-F grading system designed to hold schools accountable faces an uncertain future as state leaders review it to ensure that marks awarded are fair and impartial.

The Indiana Department of Education is reviewing all grades awarded under an A-F system implemented by former schools chief Tony Bennett. The review followed revelations that Bennett and his staff changed the formula to improve the score of a top Republican donor's charter school.

Bennett resigned Thursday as Florida's education commissioner.

An Indiana teachers union called Thursday for the grading system to be suspended. Many school superintendents say they don't want a system "connected to corruption and manipulation."

Superintendent Glenda Ritz has ordered a review of grades. Republican Gov. Mike Pence says he supports the system but that a review is in order.
